Watch now as the leaf falls

Watch now as the leaf falls, making no sound
When it greets the earth below, the bare bough
Looking on the brief epoch ending now,
As the leaf slowly settles to the ground.
Beneath this simple act of life and death
There lies a mystery to which no sign
Is given, no inclination that shines
Its light, save the fluttering of a breath,
Fading away, to leave the aftermath
With its sad preludes and the final act,
Which speaks to the trivial winds of change.
This is the world that makes us thread the path,
Timeless and resolute, this lonely tract
We journey to unknown lands, cold and strange.
