Love’s Requiem

My heart, hardened in the opaque jargon
Of a love rebuffed, too long embittered
To feel the pale beauty of dreams, flittered
Away, bartered, spend in life’s sad bargain.
I would meet you in that eternal fire,
You who had once turned from the captive flame,
Longing to be free, sad and full of shame,
Riven with brittle chains of mute desire.
And yet somehow I might forget, and see
Those eyes, looking back again, and to know
These hands entwined with mine can still bestow,
Such simple gifts; blushing with ecstasy
I dream of us as one, through bloodshot eyes,
Long lost in moonlight hues and cloudy skies.
