I who have watched you sleep

I who have watched you sleep, now sleepless lay,
Gathering up your dreams before they fall
And hold them with my own till break of day,
To ward them from the hurts that may befall.
For as the rosebud blooms, it withers too,
It’s petals left for all too brief a stay
And makes the earth the tomb wherein it grew,
To ponder on the dreams that went astray
So lovers live your dreams for fear they rust
And take all happiness that comes your way,
Before your hopes and joys return to dust
For the promises in life are oft betrayed
Look to your heart where all your dreams are made
And live them ere the joys of life will fade
